French for ‘high fashion’, haute couture refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted garments, utilizing a high level of instruction in specific techniques. Moreover, the title is reserved for designers approved by Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Until now, only two design houses in the United States have been extended the privilege of showing in Paris. Perhaps with the recent induction of Academy of Couture Art as 23rd on the list of top 50 design schools in the world, American Couture Designers will show an increased influence in high fashion.

Independently established by Sonia and Thierry Été, the Academy of Couture Art in Los Angeles “provides an exclusive education in haute couture technique and design formerly unavailable outside of the leading European fashion houses.” Pieces handcrafted by students involved a team effort on the part of designer, pattern maker, and embellisher. Each individual becomes exceptionally talented in an art form of design while encompassing the whole process through in-depth four year programs specializing in pattern making to handcrafted lace and beading. The techniques gifted at ACA are the extensive efforts developed by Ms. Été herself; who spent several years developing her knowledgeable repertoire in Paris.
