Fashion with a cause, Sseko Designs was created with a mission in mind. Generated to assist the young women in Uganda pursue their dreams of continuing education, Sseko Designs now makes what was once a mere dream, more of a reality. Sseko Designs hires recent secondary school graduates for a nine month period in order to assist with not only making money but saving it for a higher education.
Sseko Designs was created by a college graduate by the name of Liz. Her academic background is in journalism and communications, so she went to Uganda with the intention of using her communication skills to assist a youth development organization with their communications, donor relations and quarterly newsletter. Using her degree to help others was exactly what Liz sought out to do, something that was once unimaginable yet desirable. Liz went to Uganda on a whim when she graduated from college in 2008. Over the past several years, her passion towards global issues, specifically poverty and women’s rights, had been growing.
Liz had entered into a community in a world of brokenness and despair, where there was so much hope for success. Some of the young women are from villages that have never seen one of their own women continue on to University. They had received an incredible education and were qualified academically to continue. The goal of Sseko Designs is two-fold: provide university tuition for these promising young women through a sustainable monthly income, while also contributing to the overall economic development of Uganda. All they needed was an opportunity, an opportunity to work, to succeed, to make a change, and most importantly an opportunity to live.
Sseko Designs began as a line of sandals, which consist of one simple and quality leather sandal base, but offer a wide range of interchangeable straps, including unique prints, chiffon materials and sultry metallic, that can be tied hundreds of ways. Sseko Designs now offers a sandal line, wedding line, clutches and creative sandal accessories. Every sandal has a story, and with Sseko Designs this story has only begun, but with your help, it will be a story of hope, success, and change. Although consumerism makes many empty promises, responsible and proactive consumerism has the ability to change lives.
